Ayslyn, a twenty-seven-year-old kindergarten teacher has been hearing impaired hearing for 23 years. Ayslyn got sick when she was 4 years old and that resulted in her losing her hearing in both ears. She has had extensive surgery on both of her ears. She recently had a temporal bonebridge surgery with Dr. Voelker.Â
What is a bonebridge bone conduction implant?Â
According to Med-El, “Bonebridge is a partially implantable hearing system. It’s suitable for those with conductive and mixed hearing loss or single-sided deafness.” The implant is fixed on the temporal bone and conducts the vibrations to the inner ear. This method bypasses a damaged outer and middle ear, as the vibrations go directly to the inner ear.Â
Our team was able to sit in on Ayslyn’s bone bridge activation with Audiologist, Dr. Lewis. Ayslyn shared she has gone through many hearing aids and they have never been a solution for her. She was full of joy and excited to activate her solution to her hearing loss journey. Ayslyn heard about the implant many years ago but she decided to stick with hearing aids. She shares the device has very much developed over the years to a magnetic round object that attaches to the side of your head. Ayslyn says, “There was never a moment, once I heard how simple this device is for me, that I was like ‘nope’ I can’t do it.”Â
