What to do if your nose is bleeding or re-bleeds?
- Stay Calm, Place Ice under your lip and on the back of your neck.
- If you have a Sinus Rinse-Wash, Wash out the clots in your nose over a sink. Get all clots out.
- Spray several sprays of AFRIN into your nose on both sides and hold pressure on your nostrils for 5 minutes by the clock. You may place Afrin on a cotton ball and place in the nostril that is bleeding and then apply digital pressure with your fingers compressing your nostril.
- If the nosebleed is significant or if you are having difficulty breathing or spitting out significant amounts of blood, then call 911 or go to the Emergency Room.
What to do after your nosebleed has stopped?
- Take your Blood Pressure, make sure your blood pressure is under control.
- Saline mist spray (Simply Saline or Ocean from drugstore) three times/day.
- Lubrication: Apply Ayr nasal gel, Ponaris, mupirocin, Vaseline or Neosporin/ to the inside of your nostrils on your septum twice a day.
- If you wear oxygen in your nose make sure the cannulas are not touching the septum.
- If you are taking blood thinning medication (Plavix, Coumadin, Warfarin, Aspirin, etc), talk to your doctor about these med-ications to suspend them for a few days to allow the bleeding spot to heal.
- Come in for a check up, you may need the area cauterized. If the area is cauterized 70% do not rebleed, 30% need an additional cautery.
