From Athlete to Advocate: My Life with Cochlear Implants and How I’m Helping Others

Mathilde Cochlear Implant Outreach Ambassador with PNI tote in Denmark.

Hello! My name is Mathilde Tranberg, and I’m a former Division I tennis player at California State University Long Beach. Originally from Denmark, I’ve spent the last four years in the United States, pursuing both my passion for tennis and my education. I was born profoundly deaf and received my first cochlear implant at the age of two, followed by a second at the age of six. Growing up in a hearing family, I never quite identified myself as a “deaf person” and instead, focused on the opportunities my cochlear implants provided.

During my final year of college, I had a heartfelt conversation with my parents about my early years with cochlear implants. They shared their concerns about my speech and language development when I first received them—concerns that were common at the time, as cochlear implants were still relatively new. I was number 84 in Denmark to receive a cochlear implant, and at that time, I could only receive one implant at a time. Four years later, I traveled to Sweden for my second implant.

For many years, I was self-conscious about wearing my cochlear implants. I didn’t like how they looked and felt uncomfortable with the stares I received. However, over time, I realized that cochlear implants are far more than just medical devices—they are life-changing technologies that enable me to live fully, connect with loved ones, and engage in a world where sound plays a central role.

Living with cochlear implants does come with its challenges, but I am continually learning how to embrace the opportunities they provide. The journey isn’t always easy, but the rewards are immense, and the technology continues to evolve, bringing more possibilities than I could have imagined.

My Role as a Cochlear Implant Outreach Ambassador

Currently, I work at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute (PNI) in Los Angeles, California, as the Cochlear Implant Outreach Ambassador. My role is to advocate, educate, and provide support for individuals on their cochlear implant journey. It is my mission to create a safe, supportive environment where children, teenagers, and adults with hearing loss can connect, share experiences, and find comfort in knowing they are not alone.

Through outreach programs, patient education, and one-on-one support, I aim to help individuals feel confident and empowered as they navigate life with cochlear implants. Whether you’re new to cochlear implants or facing challenges with rehabilitation, mapping, or troubleshooting, I am here to guide you through the process.

Introducing Mondays with Mathilde

Mondays with Mathilde Flyer

I’m excited to announce a new initiative: Mondays with Mathilde. This is a free, one-on-one session where you can ask me any cochlear implant-related questions. Whether you need assistance with device orientation, troubleshooting, or rehabilitation strategies, these sessions are designed to offer personalized support to help you feel more confident with your cochlear implant. As someone who has gone through the process, I understand how overwhelming it can be at times. That’s why I want to ensure you have the resources and support you need to thrive.

Let’s Connect

If you’re considering cochlear implants, have questions about the process, or would like to connect for support, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to talk about my experiences and share insights that may help guide you or someone you know. You can reach me via email at mathilde.tranberg@providence.org or follow me on Instagram @hearlogic.myspace for more tips, stories, and inspiration.

Together, we can work toward raising awareness and fostering greater acceptance of cochlear implants in our communities. I believe in the power of shared knowledge and positive change, and I look forward to connecting with you!
